ABINGTON, Pa. — Penn State will celebrate its 10th GivingTuesday on Dec. 3, and Penn State Abington invites alumni and friends to mark this milestone by making a gift to support the Abington General Scholarship and Student Emergency Assistance funds.
The funds are an important component of Abington’s campus-wide network of support for students, according to Chancellor Gary Liguori.
"GivingTuesday is what 'We Are' looks like in action at Penn State Abington," Liguori said. "Our students have their individual aspirations, but they achieve their goals thanks to your collective generosity. In this season of gratitude, please consider supporting the campus emergency assistance and scholarship funds on GivingTuesday. Gifts of every size are pooled so we can reduce barriers to higher education and provide resources that keep students on the path toward earning a Penn State degree."
Many students are on the edge of housing, food and transportation insecurities, and when an emergency strikes — a job loss, a car breaks down — they may miss classes or even withdraw from school. Gifts to the emergency assistance fund give Student Affairs staff the resources to respond to students with immediate, urgent needs.
The average gap between educational costs and the financial resources of Abington students exceeds $14,000 a year, so scholarship funds that help defray the cost of education are often a deciding factor in whether students can enroll. Students who qualify for need-based financial aid are eligible to receive funds from the Abington General Scholarship Fund.
True to Penn State GivingTuesday tradition, the celebration will kick off on Monday, Dec. 2, at 18:55 (6:55 p.m. EST) — a nod to the year the University was founded.
